    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing August 15, 2018, as “India
    3         Independence Day” and August 2018 as “India Heritage
    4         Month” in Florida.
    5  
    6         WHEREAS, the people of Florida represent many cultures and
    7  have a great tradition of celebrating significant milestones and
    8  events of cultural and historical importance, and
    9         WHEREAS, Floridians are proud to join with their fellow
   10  residents of Indian heritage throughout the state and beyond as
   11  they commemorate the 71st anniversary of India’s independence,
   12  and
   13         WHEREAS, in 1947, India proclaimed independence and
   14  officially became a self-governing country, marking the
   15  beginning of its identity as a free and sovereign nation, and
   16         WHEREAS, as a growing democracy, India has proved to be a
   17  courageous nation, seeking to establish as its basic,
   18  fundamental principles those same values upon which the United
   19  States of America was founded: freedom, opportunity, and
   20  justice, and
   21         WHEREAS, Florida residents who hail from India, or who have
   22  ancestral ties to India, continually demonstrate the greatness
   23  of the culture, arts, traditions, and natural beauty of their
   24  homeland, and the contributions of these individuals are notable
   25  and reflect success in many fields, including education,
   26  medicine, science, technology, business, and industry, and
   27         WHEREAS, Florida welcomes the opportunity to promote a
   28  greater understanding of the world’s cultures, and this
   29  occasion, the 71st anniversary of India’s independence, provides
   30  an excellent means by which Floridians of all backgrounds can
   31  recognize the contributions made by the country and people of
   32  India and extend best wishes to them on commemorating this
   33  historic milestone of independence, NOW, THEREFORE,

   35  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   36  
   37         That August 15, 2018, be designated as “India Independence
   38  Day” and August 2018 as “India Heritage Month.”
