    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing November 2018 as “Diabetes
    3         Awareness Month” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body
    6  does not properly produce or use the hormone insulin, which
    7  regulates blood sugar, and
    8         WHEREAS, more than 30 million Americans, or 1 out of every
    9  10 Americans, including approximately 2.8 million Floridians,
   10  have diabetes, and
   11         WHEREAS, type 2 diabetes is the disease’s most common form,
   12  representing an estimated 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed
   13  adult diabetes cases in the United States, and
   14         WHEREAS, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney
   15  failure, amputations, stroke, and heart disease, claiming the
   16  life of one American every 3 minutes, and
   17         WHEREAS, people with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer
   18  a heart attack or stroke at a young age, and
   19         WHEREAS, having diabetes is associated with substantially
   20  higher lifetime medical expenditures despite being associated
   21  with reduced life expectancy, costing the American public $245
   22  billion annually, and
   23         WHEREAS, increased public education and awareness about the
   24  risks of diabetes can effectively improve outcomes and reduce
   25  the financial burden of the disease, NOW, THEREFORE,

   27  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   28  
   29         That November 2018 is recognized as “Diabetes Awareness
   30  Month” in Florida.
   31         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that state agencies, public health
   32  authorities, health care providers, employers, insurers, and
   33  other health care stakeholders are encouraged to promote
   34  education and awareness of diabetes, risk factors associated
   35  with the disease, and opportunities to promote better health for
   36  the individuals and populations at risk of being diagnosed with
   37  the disease.
