    1                           Senate Memorial                         
    2         A memorial to the Congress of the United States,
    3         urging Congress to preserve the Deferred Action for
    4         Childhood Arrivals Program.
    5  
    6         WHEREAS, in June 2012, President Barack Obama’s
    7  administration established the Deferred Action for Childhood
    8  Arrivals (DACA) program for immigrants who came to the United
    9  States as children and created the opportunity for such
   10  immigrants to apply for temporary residence and eligibility for
   11  a work permit in the United States, and
   12         WHEREAS, eligible applicants arrived in the United States
   13  when they were under 16 years of age and have lived here
   14  continuously since June 15, 2007, and
   15         WHEREAS, approximately 787,580 individuals have qualified
   16  for DACA, including 50,216 who reside in the State of Florida,
   17  and
   18         WHEREAS, DACA recipients are from Africa, Asia, the
   19  Caribbean,and Central America, and
   20         WHEREAS, on September 5, 2017, President Donald Trump’s
   21  administration rescinded the DACA program, but delayed full
   22  implementation of the recision for 6 months so that the Congress
   23  of the United States may reach a legislative resolution on the
   24  program, and
   25         WHEREAS, ending the DACA program will uproot hundreds of
   26  thousands of DACA recipients and separate them from their
   27  family, friends, and support networks, NOW, THEREFORE,
   28  
   29  Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   30  
   31         That the Legislature of the State of Florida urges the
   32  Congress of the United States to preserve the Deferred Action
   33  for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program.
   34         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State dispatch
   35  copies of this memorial to the President of the United States,
   36  the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the
   37  House of Representatives, and each member of the Florida
   38  delegation to the United States Congress.
