Florida Senate - 2019 (NP) SR 1816 By Senator Harrell 25-03043-19 20191816__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing May 5-11, 2019, and the first 3 full week in May each year thereafter, as “Tardive 4 Dyskinesia Awareness Week” in Florida. 5 6 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia is a condition of involuntary 7 muscle movements of the face, trunk, and extremities which can 8 vary in frequency and severity, and 9 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia is a condition that may occur 10 as a result of treatment using dopamine receptor blocking agents 11 for both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric conditions, and may 12 persist even after treatment is discontinued, and 13 WHEREAS, research conducted by the Citizens Commission on 14 Human Rights shows that more than 12 million Americans take 15 antipsychotic medications and that more than 500,000 of such 16 Americans may have tardive dyskinesia, and 17 WHEREAS, anyone taking an antipsychotic medication may 18 develop tardive dyskinesia, but people who are elderly, female, 19 diabetic or who have a mental illness are at a greater risk of 20 developing symptoms, and 21 WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of all Floridians that 22 public awareness of tardive dyskinesia be increased, NOW, 23 THEREFORE, 24 25 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 26 27 That May 5-11, 2019, and the first full week in May each 28 year thereafter, is recognized as “Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness 29 Week” in Florida.
