Florida Senate - 2019 (NP) SR 1852 By Senator Passidomo 28-00451A-19 20191852__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing May 2019 as “Bladder Cancer 3 Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, according to the National Cancer Institute, 6 bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United 7 States, and 8 WHEREAS, among the 50 states, Florida had the second 9 highest average number of bladder cancer diagnoses per year as 10 of 2018, and 11 WHEREAS, bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in 12 men and more men than women are diagnosed with bladder cancer 13 each year, and, as of 2015, approximately 708,444 people in the 14 United States were living with bladder cancer, and 15 WHEREAS, approximately 81,190 new cases of bladder cancer 16 were expected to be diagnosed in 2018, and approximately 17,240 17 deaths from bladder cancer were expected, and 18 WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, a 19 higher percentage of people suffering from the disease are 55 20 years of age or older, and 21 WHEREAS, bladder cancer ranks 18th of all diseases in the 22 United States in terms of research dollars expended, and 23 WHEREAS, exposure to certain workplace chemicals and 24 smoking are major contributors to the disease, and 25 WHEREAS, because diagnosis can be delayed due to lack of 26 awareness of early symptoms, patients should discuss anything 27 unusual with their urinary system with their doctors, NOW, 28 THEREFORE, 29 30 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 31 32 That May 2019 is recognized as “Bladder Cancer Awareness 33 Month” in Florida.
