    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing April 28-May 5, 2019, as the
    3         “Days of Remembrance” and May 2, 2019, as “Holocaust
    4         Memorial Day” in Florida.
    5  
    6         WHEREAS, between 1933 and 1945, the Holocaust, the state
    7  sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European
    8  Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, resulted in the
    9  murder of 6 million Jewish people, and
   10         WHEREAS, in addition, the Romani people, also known as
   11  Gypsies, and Polish people were targeted for decimation on the
   12  basis of race, ethnicity, or nation of origin, and millions of
   13  others, including persons with disabilities, Jehovah’s
   14  Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, political dissidents, and
   15  persons who identified as homosexual, suffered grievous
   16  oppression and death under Nazi tyranny, and
   17         WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity
   18  to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals,
   19  societies, and governments to remain vigilant against hatred,
   20  persecution, and tyranny, and
   21         WHEREAS, pursuant to an act of the United States Congress,
   22  Public Law No. 96-388, October 7, 1980, the United States
   23  Holocaust Memorial Council has designated April 28-May 5, 2019,
   24  as the “Days of Remembrance” for the victims of the Holocaust,
   25  including “Holocaust Memorial Day,” also known as Yom HaShoah,
   26  on May 2, 2019, and
   27         WHEREAS, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in
   28  honor of its survivors, and in utmost gratitude for the risks
   29  taken by rescuers and liberators, the residents of this state
   30  are encouraged to rededicate themselves to the principles of
   31  human dignity and to individual freedom in a just society,
   32  thereby ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated, NOW,
   33  THEREFORE,

   35  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   36  
   37         That April 28-May 5, 2019, is designated as the “Days of
   38  Remembrance” and May 2, 2019, is designated as “Holocaust
   39  Memorial Day” in Florida.
