Florida Senate - 2020 (NP) SR 1918 By Senator Thurston 33-03579-20 20201918__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the people of the City of 3 Lauderdale Lakes for having elected the first-ever 4 city governing body of its size which is comprised 5 solely of women of color and recognizing the City of 6 Lauderdale Lakes for its progressive goals of minority 7 representation by both women and people of color. 8 9 WHEREAS, the City of Lauderdale Lakes was incorporated on 10 June 22, 1961, and 11 WHEREAS, the City of Lauderdale Lakes originally was a 12 popular retirement area for northeasterners, many of them New 13 Yorkers and those of the Jewish faith, but as the 20th century 14 drew to a close, the population grew more diverse to include 15 many residents with Caribbean and African-American heritage, and 16 WHEREAS, the current population of the City of Lauderdale 17 Lakes is approximately 35,000, residing in approximately 15,000 18 households, and 19 WHEREAS, in 2014, the electorate of the City of Lauderdale 20 Lakes voted to establish a governing body of five elected 21 officials, including a mayor elected at large, and 22 WHEREAS, in November 2016, the City of Lauderdale Lakes 23 held municipal elections and five women of color were voted into 24 office, making it the only city in this state with a city 25 commission composed entirely of women, and 26 WHEREAS, the City of Lauderdale Lakes City Commission is 27 composed of Mayor Hazelle Rogers, Vice Mayor Beverly Williams, 28 and City Commissioners Sandra Davey, Gloria Lewis, and Veronica 29 Edwards Phillips, NOW, THEREFORE, 30 31 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 32 33 That the people of the City of Lauderdale Lakes are 34 recognized for having elected the first-ever city governing body 35 of its size which is comprised solely of women of color, and the 36 City of Lauderdale Lakes is recognized for its progressive goals 37 of minority representation by both women and people of color.
