    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution declaring the Florida State University
    3         Seminoles basketball team, by virtue of tremendous
    4         skill on the court and the heart and spirit shown by
    5         the players and coaches this basketball season, the
    6         2020 National College Athletic Association basketball
    7         champions by default upon cancellation of the NCAA
    8         tournament due to concerns raised by the spread of the
    9         novel coronavirus COVID-19.

   11         WHEREAS, the Florida State University Seminoles basketball
   12  team, under the leadership of Coach Leonard Hamilton, was
   13  crowned the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
   14  champion after a season of superlatives, thus earning the No. 1
   15  seed in the ACC postseason tournament, and
   16         WHEREAS, upon cancellation of the ACC postseason tournament
   17  due to concerns raised by the spread of the novel coronavirus
   18  COVID-19, the Seminoles were officially proclaimed the
   19  conference champions and were awarded the ACC championship
   20  trophy, and
   21         WHEREAS, the Seminoles, ranked No. 4 in the national
   22  college basketball standings, ended the regular season with a
   23  26-5 record and were favored to challenge the top seeds in the
   24  national tournament and take home the national title, and
   25         WHEREAS, the NCAA basketball championship tournament, known
   26  to fans, players, and pundits as March Madness, has also been
   27  canceled due to concerns raised by the spread of the novel
   28  coronavirus COVID-19, NOW, THEREFORE,

   30  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   31  
   32         That the Florida State University Seminoles basketball
   33  team, by virtue of tremendous skill on the court and the heart
   34  and spirit shown by the players and coaches this basketball
   35  season, is declared the 2020 National College Athletic
   36  Association basketball champions by default upon cancellation of
   37  the NCAA tournament due to concerns raised by the spread of the
   38  novel coronavirus COVID-19.
   39         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with
   40  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Coach Leonard
   41  Hamilton and Florida State University President John Thrasher as
   42  a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
