Florida Senate - 2020 (NP) SR 490 By Senator Passidomo 28-00667A-20 2020490__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing May 2020 as “Bladder Cancer 3 Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, according to the National Institutes of Health, 6 bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men and, as 7 of 2015, approximately 708,444 people in the United States were 8 living with bladder cancer, and 9 WHEREAS, Florida was estimated to have the second-highest 10 average annual number of new bladder cancer diagnoses of all of 11 the states, behind only California, and 12 WHEREAS, it was estimated that 80,470 new cases would be 13 diagnosed nationwide in 2019, while it was estimated that 17,670 14 deaths from bladder cancer would occur, and 15 WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, this 16 cancer is more common in persons who are 55 years of age or 17 older and significantly more common in men, and 18 WHEREAS, while bladder cancer is the 6th most common cancer 19 overall in the United States, it ranks 17th in terms of research 20 funding, and 21 WHEREAS, exposure to certain workplace chemicals and 22 smoking are major risk factors for bladder cancer, and 23 WHEREAS, because diagnosis can be delayed due to the lack 24 of awareness of early symptoms, patients should immediately 25 discuss any concerns regarding the health of their urinary 26 systems with their physicians, NOW, THEREFORE, 27 28 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 29 30 That May 2020 is recognized as “Bladder Cancer Awareness 31 Month” in Florida.
