Florida Senate - 2021 (NP) SR 2020 By Senator Berman 31-00101-21 20212020__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing September 2021 as “Brain 3 Aneurysm Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, a brain aneurysm is an abnormal saccular or 6 fusiform bulging of an artery in the brain, and 7 WHEREAS, it is estimated that 1 in every 50 individuals in 8 the United States has a brain aneurysm, with aneurysms most 9 likely to occur in individuals between 35 and 60 years of age, 10 and 11 WHEREAS, brain aneurysms are more likely to occur in women 12 than in men, by a 3 to 2 ratio, and young and middle-aged 13 African Americans have a higher risk of brain aneurysm rupture 14 than Caucasians, and 15 WHEREAS, a number of risk factors can contribute to the 16 formation of a brain aneurysm, including smoking, hypertension, 17 and a family history of brain aneurysms, and 18 WHEREAS, each year, more than 30,000 individuals nationwide 19 suffer from a ruptured brain aneurysm, half of whom die as a 20 result, and 21 WHEREAS, a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of bleeding 22 stroke that occurs between the brain and the membrane that 23 surrounds it, can lead to brain damage, stroke, and death, and 24 WHEREAS, research currently is being conducted in the 25 United States in order to better understand, prevent, and treat 26 brain aneurysms, and it is clear that early detection of brain 27 aneurysms can save lives, and 28 WHEREAS, the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, a nonprofit 29 organization, remains a globally recognized leader in brain 30 aneurysm awareness, education, support, advocacy, and research 31 funding, NOW, THEREFORE, 32 33 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 34 35 That September 2021 is recognized as “Brain Aneurysm 36 Awareness Month” in Florida.
