Florida Senate - 2021 (NP) SR 2028 By Senator Gibson 6-03075A-21 20212028__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution expressing appreciation for the 3 remarkable contributions made to the people of this 4 state by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and 5 recognizing March 21, 2021, as the 27th annual “Delta 6 Day at the Capitol.” 7 8 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a private, 9 not-for-profit organization founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 10 illustrious collegiate African-American women at Howard 11 University in Washington, D.C., and 12 WHEREAS, only 6 weeks after its founding, Delta Sigma Theta 13 Sorority, Inc., joined in the women’s suffrage movement, a 14 historic endeavor that transformed the role of women in the 15 democratic process, and 16 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a sisterhood 17 of college-educated women committed to implementing the 18 sorority’s mission through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: 19 economic development, educational development, physical and 20 mental health, political awareness and involvement, and 21 international awareness and involvement, and 22 WHEREAS, in 2013, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., 23 celebrated 100 years of commendable service and support to local 24 communities, leading dialogue on public policy issues, 25 supporting quality education, producing new projects to 26 stimulate current and future economic growth, and improving the 27 holistic well-being of minority populations internationally, and 28 WHEREAS, with more than 250,000 college-educated women 29 initiated and more than 900 chapters worldwide, 52 of which are 30 located in Florida and the Bahamas, members of Delta Sigma Theta 31 Sorority, Inc., are clearly focused and visible as corporate and 32 civic leaders, productive public officials, acclaimed 33 academicians, and activists in their own right, and 34 WHEREAS, for the past 26 years, the Florida chapters of 35 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., have conducted “Delta Days at 36 the Capitol,” during which members have a unique opportunity to 37 show their support for policies and legislation that will impact 38 every area of the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust; promote the 39 role of leadership, advocacy, and empowerment in effecting 40 social change and public policy; advocate for social justice, as 41 well as broaden members’ knowledge of the state’s legislative 42 process; and influence the enactment of legislation of 43 particular interest to African Americans and women, and 44 WHEREAS, Senator Audrey Gibson is an esteemed member of 45 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., NOW, THEREFORE, 46 47 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 48 49 That March 21, 2021, is recognized as the 27th annual 50 “Delta Day at the Capitol.”
