    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the
    3         opening of the main terminal building at Tampa
    4         International Airport.
    5  
    6         WHEREAS, on April 15, 1971, Tampa International Airport
    7  opened the doors to its brand-new, revolutionary landside
    8  airside facility, drawing more than 60,000 members of the public
    9  and the media to tour the facility before the first jet even
   10  arrived, and
   11         WHEREAS, Tampa International Airport, itself, became a
   12  tourist attraction for Central Florida as people came from all
   13  over the world to ride the first-ever airport shuttles, which
   14  were featured in Time magazine, and to marvel at the hub-and
   15  spoke design that was spacious yet easy to navigate, and
   16         WHEREAS, under the leadership of the Hillsborough County
   17  Aviation Authority and then-Director George J. Bean, Tampa
   18  International Airport was held up as a model that airports
   19  across the nation used for decades as an example of excellence,
   20  and
   21         WHEREAS, among the most innovative elements of the new
   22  airport was its red-blue wayfinding system, designed by
   23  environmental graphic designer Jane Davis Doggett, which
   24  continues to guide the traveler experience from curbside to
   25  ticketing to the airside terminals with color rather than
   26  directional navigation, making the intentionally short walk from
   27  vehicle to gate even more seamless, and
   28         WHEREAS, Ms. Doggett also created the airport’s “Spirit of
   29  Flight” logo, a timeless representation of water, jet, and
   30  sunset which has withstood the passage of time, and
   31         WHEREAS, Tampa International Airport’s original
   32  architecture and customer-focused culture have been maintained,
   33  even as the Tampa Bay area and passenger traffic have grown
   34  immensely and, today, the facility is a gem in the community,
   35  still drawing praise from world travelers as well as from those
   36  who bring business and events to the area, and
   37         WHEREAS, Tampa International Airport has ranked in the top
   38  5 in the J.D. Power and Associates annual airport satisfaction
   39  survey for the last 6 years, and
   40         WHEREAS, in 2021, Airports Council International named
   41  Tampa International Airport one of the most hygienic in North
   42  America as part of the organization’s annual Airport Service
   43  Quality awards, which highlight the world’s best airports as
   44  judged by their guests, and
   45         WHEREAS, because of the vision for the future of those who
   46  conceived it, Tampa International Airport will remain an
   47  invaluable economic driver for the region for many generations
   48  to come, NOW, THEREFORE,

   50  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

   52         That the 50th anniversary of the opening of the main
   53  terminal building at Tampa International Airport is recognized.
