Florida Senate - 2021 (NP) SR 2050 By Senator Cruz 18-02206-21 20212050__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing May 2021 as “Osteoporosis 3 Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, one in two women and one in four men in the United 6 States who are 50 years of age or older will fracture a bone due 7 to osteoporosis in their lifetimes, and 8 WHEREAS, approximately 4.7 million women who are 50 years 9 of age or older live in this state, and 10 WHEREAS, a woman’s risk of fracturing a hip is equal to her 11 combined risk of being diagnosed with breast, uterine, and 12 ovarian cancer, and 13 WHEREAS, bone fractures due to osteoporosis can have 14 serious long-term consequences, and 15 WHEREAS, after the first bone fracture, postmenopausal 16 women with osteoporosis are five times more likely to fracture a 17 bone within the next year, and 18 WHEREAS, persons who are living with osteoporosis often 19 remain undiagnosed and untreated, and 20 WHEREAS, since lost bone cannot be replaced, treatment for 21 osteoporosis typically focuses on preventing any further bone 22 loss, NOW, THEREFORE, 23 24 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 25 26 That May 2021 is recognized as “Osteoporosis Awareness 27 Month” in Florida to increase awareness, screening, and 28 prevention and provide educational resources to inform and 29 empower women to take charge of their bone health.
