    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to naming highways; requiring counties
    3         and municipalities to rename their respective portions
    4         of Dixie Highway, Old Dixie Highway, North Dixie
    5         Highway, or South Dixie Highway as “Harriet Tubman
    6         Highway” by a specified date; providing exceptions;
    7         requiring the Department of Transportation to rename
    8         portions of such highways as “Harriet Tubman Highway”
    9         upon approval of the appropriate board of county
   10         commissioners or governing body of a municipality;
   11         requiring the department to coordinate with applicable
   12         boards of county commissioners or governing bodies of
   13         municipalities to rename portions of such highways
   14         under certain circumstances; providing an effective
   15         date.
   16          
   17  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   18  
   19         Section 1. Dixie Highway, Old Dixie Highway, North Dixie
   20  Highway, and South Dixie Highway renaming.—
   21         (1) Notwithstanding any other law or local ordinance or
   22  resolution, by July 1, 2022, each county shall, if applicable,
   23  rename any portion of Dixie Highway, Old Dixie Highway, North
   24  Dixie Highway, or South Dixie Highway which runs through the
   25  county, pursuant to chapter 336, Florida Statutes, as “Harriet
   26  Tubman Highway,” unless the county renames any such portion to
   27  another name of the county’s choosing.
   28         (2) Notwithstanding any other law or local ordinance or
   29  resolution, by July 1, 2022, each municipality shall, if
   30  applicable, rename any portion of Dixie Highway, Old Dixie
   31  Highway, North Dixie Highway, or South Dixie Highway which runs
   32  through the municipality and which is classified as being part
   33  of the city street system, as defined in s. 334.03(3), Florida
   34  Statutes, as “Harriet Tubman Highway,” unless the municipality
   35  renames any such portion to another name of the municipality’s
   36  choosing.
   37         (3) Notwithstanding any other law, by July 1, 2022, the
   38  Department of Transportation shall rename any portion of Dixie
   39  Highway, Old Dixie Highway, North Dixie Highway, or South Dixie
   40  Highway classified as part of the State Highway System, as
   41  “Harriet Tubman Highway” upon approval by the appropriate board
   42  of county commissioners or governing body of a municipality with
   43  jurisdiction over the geographical area in which the portion of
   44  the state road is located. If the board or governing body does
   45  not provide such approval to the department, the department must
   46  coordinate with the board or governing body to rename any
   47  portion of Dixie Highway, Old Dixie Highway, North Dixie
   48  Highway, or South Dixie Highway to a name of the board’s or
   49  governing body’s choosing.
   50         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2021.
