    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution celebrating the creation of the Charles
    3         S. Dean, Sr., Endowed Scholarship for Health Sciences
    4         and the renaming of the College of Central Florida
    5         Citrus Campus Learning and Conference Center as the
    6         Charles S. Dean, Sr., Educational Center in
    7         recognition of the lifelong public service of Senator
    8         Charles S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr.
    9  
   10         WHEREAS, Charles S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr., was born into a
   11  life of public service on May 31, 1939, in Jacksonville to
   12  Citrus County Sheriff Charles S. Dean and Rema Y. Dean, who
   13  served as the city clerk of Inverness, and
   14         WHEREAS, in 1962, Charles S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr., earned an
   15  Associate in Arts degree from the former Central Florida
   16  Community College and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science
   17  degree in criminology-police administration from Florida State
   18  University and a Master of Science degree in criminal justice
   19  from Rollins College, and
   20         WHEREAS, Charles S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr., served in the
   21  United States Marine Corps Reserves for more than 5 years;
   22  worked as a juvenile counselor, teacher, and administrator in
   23  the Citrus County Schools and as a cattleman; and in 1981 was
   24  elected sheriff of Citrus County, a position he held until 1996,
   25  and
   26         WHEREAS, during his service as sheriff, Charles S.
   27  “Charlie” Dean, Sr., was appointed to the National Sheriffs’
   28  Association board of directors, served as president of the
   29  Florida Sheriffs Association, and was named “Top Crime
   30  Prevention Administrator” by the Florida Crime Prevention
   31  Association, and
   32         WHEREAS, Charles S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr., served in the
   33  Florida House of Representatives from 2002-2007 and was elected
   34  to the Florida Senate in 2007, where he served until his
   35  retirement in 2016, and
   36         WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Citrus County, Charles S.
   37  “Charlie” Dean, Sr., was recognized by the College of Central
   38  Florida in 2011 with its Distinguished Alumni Award, and
   39         WHEREAS, as a founding member of the Citrus County Hospital
   40  Board, Charles S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr., has a longstanding
   41  commitment to health care, and in recognition of this
   42  commitment, the board has made a $1 million gift to the College
   43  of Central Florida to establish the Charles S. Dean, Sr.,
   44  Endowed Scholarship for Health Sciences, which will provide
   45  tuition assistance to Citrus County residents seeking a health
   46  sciences degree from the college, and
   47         WHEREAS, in recognition of this gift, on Friday, January
   48  28, 2022, the College of Central Florida Citrus Campus Learning
   49  and Conference Center will be renamed the Charles S. Dean, Sr.,
   50  Educational Center, NOW, THEREFORE,
   51  
   52  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   53  
   54         That the creation of the Charles S. Dean, Sr., Endowed
   55  Scholarship for Health Sciences and the renaming of the College
   56  of Central Florida Citrus Campus Learning and Conference Center
   57  as the Charles S. Dean, Sr., Educational Center are celebrated
   58  and the lifelong public service of Senator Charles S. “Charlie”
   59  Dean, Sr., is recognized.
   60         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with
   61  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Senator Charles
   62  S. “Charlie” Dean, Sr., as a tangible token of the sentiments of
   63  the Florida Senate.
