Florida Senate - 2022 (NP) SR 1976 By Senator Hooper 16-02121-22 20221976__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing and commending Moffitt Cancer 3 Center on the occasion of its 35th anniversary. 4 5 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center was created by the 6 Legislature in 1981, with construction of the campus beginning 7 in 1983 and the center opening its doors in 1986, and 8 WHEREAS, in 1997, Moffitt Cancer Center earned a National 9 Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant and by 2001 10 received the prestigious NCI designation as a Comprehensive 11 Cancer Center, in recognition of its scientific excellence and 12 its leadership in the discovery and development of more 13 effective approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and 14 treatment, and 15 WHEREAS, with this national recognition, Moffitt Cancer 16 Center continues to attract top physicians and scientists from 17 around the world, and 18 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center provides care to nearly 19 68,000 patients annually from all of this state’s 67 counties, 20 all 50 states, and 133 countries, and 21 WHEREAS, to accommodate a growing number of patients and 22 fulfill a critical need for increased outpatient services, the 23 center embraced plans for expansion, including the opening of 24 Moffitt Cancer Center at International Plaza in 2011 and the 25 Moffitt McKinley Outpatient Center in 2015, and 26 WHEREAS, over the course of 35 years, the number of 27 employees at Moffitt Cancer Center has grown from 400 to more 28 than 7,500, with an economic impact of nearly $2.5 billion, and 29 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center annually trains more than 30 2,600 oncology professionals, and 31 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is a leader in 32 groundbreaking discoveries in basic, clinical, quantitative, and 33 population science, with Moffitt Cancer Center researchers 34 playing a key role in the approval of HPV vaccines to prevent 35 cervical, head and neck, and other cancers and in the 36 development of CAR-T cell therapy, a new curative treatment for 37 lymphoma, and 38 WHEREAS, these researchers also played a key role in the 39 understanding of the genetic basis of cancer risk and in the use 40 of mathematical models to inform adaptive therapy to reduce the 41 risk of cancer recurrence, and 42 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is deeply committed to 43 serving and engaging with diverse communities through outreach, 44 education, and screening, and 45 WHEREAS, to that end, Moffitt Cancer Center continues to 46 work closely with its patient and community advisory boards to 47 meet their needs and recognize their priorities; is providing 48 cancer education related to prevention, early detection, and 49 clinical trials; and is providing free screenings for a variety 50 of cancers across the Tampa Bay area, NOW, THEREFORE, 51 52 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 53 54 That Moffitt Cancer Center is recognized and commended on 55 the occasion of its 35th anniversary for its contribution to the 56 prevention and cure of cancer and for its vision to transform 57 cancer care through cutting edge science, high-quality clinical 58 care, and novel partnerships.
