Florida Senate - 2022 (NP) SR 794 By Senator Jones 35-00857-22 2022794__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing September 2022 as “Polycystic 3 Kidney Disease Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive 6 genetic disorder that causes damage to the kidneys and the 7 cardiovascular, endocrine, hepatic, and gastrointestinal organ 8 systems, and 9 WHEREAS, PKD causes kidney function decline and is one of 10 the four leading causes of kidney failure in the United States, 11 and 12 WHEREAS, people who have chronic, life-threatening 13 diseases, like PKD, have a predisposition to depression due to 14 anxiety associated with pain, suffering, and the likelihood of 15 premature death and experience thoughts of suicide at a rate 16 seven times higher than the national average for the general 17 population, and 18 WHEREAS, PKD has a devastating impact on the health and 19 finances of people of all ages and affects people of all races, 20 genders, nationalities, geographic locations, and income levels, 21 and 22 WHEREAS, insurance coverage and access to comprehensive 23 care and necessary treatments continue to lag for underserved 24 communities in this state, especially black and Latinx 25 populations, and 26 WHEREAS, PKD awareness increases the public’s understanding 27 of this disorder and empowers patients and their families to 28 seek diagnosis, support, and appropriate treatment, NOW, 29 THEREFORE, 30 31 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 32 33 That September 2022 is recognized as “Polycystic Kidney 34 Disease Awareness Month” in Florida.
