Florida Senate - 2024 (NP) SR 1802 By Senator Calatayud 38-01927-24 20241802__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing February 15, 2024, as 3 Angelman Syndrome Awareness Day. 4 5 WHEREAS, Angelman syndrome is a rare, neurogenetic disorder 6 that affects chromosome 15, resulting in a person’s intellectual 7 and developmental delay, and 8 WHEREAS, about 1 in 20,000 people in the United States are 9 affected by Angelman syndrome, and 10 WHEREAS, a primary goal of the Department of Health’s Rare 11 Disease Advisory Council is to identify the data necessary to 12 understand the population with rare diseases in this state, 13 including the incidence of Angelman syndrome, and 14 WHEREAS, the University of Florida College of Medicine’s 15 Division of Genetics and Metabolism provides leading research in 16 the treatment of Angelman syndrome, and the Nicklaus Children’s 17 Hospital in Miami offers care through its Angelman Syndrome 18 Clinic, and 19 WHEREAS, the purpose of Angelman Syndrome Awareness Day is 20 to raise awareness and understanding of this condition, mobilize 21 people to action, encourage fundraising, promote research and 22 educational resources, and remember those affected by Angelman 23 syndrome, and 24 WHEREAS, with early identification and treatment, the 25 medical, sleep, seizure, and developmental issues associated 26 with Angelman syndrome may be managed, and 27 WHEREAS, the Angelman Syndrome Foundation and the 28 Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics provide advocacy, 29 education, support, and access to resources for patients, 30 families, and researchers around the world, NOW, THEREFORE, 31 32 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 33 34 That the Florida Senate hereby recognizes February 15, 35 2024, as Angelman Syndrome Awareness Day.
