Florida Senate - 2024 SR 630 By Senator Simon 3-00976A-24 2024630__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the Tallahassee-Leon County 3 Bicentennial and envisioning the powerful next chapter 4 of Florida’s Capital community. 5 6 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial presents 7 the capital of the third-most populous state in the country an 8 opportunity to reflect and celebrate 200 years of remarkable 9 achievements by citizens with drive, determination, and 10 ambition, and 11 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee, Leon County, and the 12 surrounding region have a rich human history dating back 15,000 13 years, with present-day Tallahassee being the site of the 14 Indigenous Apalachee capital of Anhaica, and 15 WHEREAS, Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, according 16 to terms of the Adams-Onis Treaty between the United States of 17 America and Spain, and 18 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee was chosen to be the seat 19 of government and Florida’s capital for this newly formed 20 territory on March 4, 1824, because of its scenic beauty and 21 enchanting cascade, for the agricultural quality of its rich 22 soils, and because of its strategic geographic position halfway 23 between the historic ports of St. Augustine and Pensacola, and 24 WHEREAS, the boundaries of Leon County were drawn to 25 encompass the newly designated capital, and the county was 26 established by the Territorial Legislature that same year on 27 December 29, 1824, and 28 WHEREAS, Florida would later be admitted as the twenty 29 seventh state in the United States in 1845, with the City of 30 Tallahassee as its capital, and 31 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee-Leon County community has produced 32 world-renowned authors, artists, and leaders in arts, politics, 33 mathematics, science, civil rights, and sports, and 34 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee and Leon County are home 35 to three world-class higher education institutions, Florida 36 State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical 37 University, and Tallahassee Community College, which 38 collectively serve approximately 70,000 students each year, and 39 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial 40 Commemoration is an opportunity to recognize the impact and 41 contributions of the rich history, natural beauty, ambition, and 42 diversity that the City of Tallahassee and Leon County have had 43 and continue to have on this state, the nation, and the world, 44 NOW, THEREFORE, 45 46 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 47 48 That the Florida Senate recognizes and extends greetings 49 and best wishes to all observing the important milestone of the 50 Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial and envisions the powerful 51 next chapter of the community. 52 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution, with 53 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Mayor of 54 Tallahassee and the Chair of the Leon County Board of County 55 Commissioners as a tangible token of the sentiments of the 56 Florida Senate.
