    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing the week of May 4, 2025, as
    3         “Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week” in Florida, and
    4         encouraging individuals who are experiencing
    5         uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements to
    6         consult their health care provider regarding their
    7         symptoms.

    9         WHEREAS, people living with a serious mental illness, such
   10  as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia,
   11  or schizoaffective disorder, often require treatment with
   12  antipsychotics for effective symptom management, and
   13         WHEREAS, while prolonged use of antipsychotics may be
   14  essential, they are associated with tardive dyskinesia (TD), a
   15  condition marked by uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive
   16  movements of the face, torso, limbs, or fingers and toes, and
   17         WHEREAS, even mild TD symptoms can be stigmatizing and
   18  impair physical, social, and emotional well-being, underscoring
   19  the urgency of early screening, detection, and intervention, and
   20         WHEREAS, it is estimated that TD affects over 800,000
   21  adults in the United States and that approximately 60 percent of
   22  people with TD remain undiagnosed, making it important to raise
   23  awareness about the symptoms, and
   24         WHEREAS, the American Psychiatric Association, in its
   25  clinical guidelines for antipsychotic treatment, recommends
   26  routine TD screening for individuals who are being treated with
   27  antipsychotics or experiencing abnormal movements and that such
   28  individuals should consult their health care providers to assess
   29  TD risk, receive TD screenings, and determine appropriate
   30  treatment, and
   31         WHEREAS, treatments for TD approved by the United States
   32  Food and Drug Administration can help manage symptoms and
   33  improve quality of life for many individuals living with TD, and
   34         WHEREAS, it is important to raise awareness of TD among the
   35  public and the medical community to ensure that patients who are
   36  prescribed antipsychotics receive care and support that align
   37  with clinical best practices, including regular screenings, NOW,
   38  THEREFORE,

   40  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   41  
   42         That the week of May 4, 2025, is recognized as “Tardive
   43  Dyskinesia Awareness Week” in Florida, and that individuals
   44  experiencing uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements
   45  are encouraged to consult their health care provider regarding
   46  their symptoms.
