1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing and commending Moffitt Cancer
3 Center on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

5 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center was created by the
6 Legislature in 1981, construction of the center began in Tampa
7 in 1983, and Moffitt opened its doors in October 1986, and
8 WHEREAS, in 2001, Moffitt Cancer Center was the first such
9 facility in Florida to earn the prestigious National Cancer
10 Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center and
11 is this state’s longest-established NCI-designated cancer
12 center, and
13 WHEREAS, NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers are
14 recognized for their scientific excellence and leadership in the
15 discovery and development of more effective approaches to cancer
16 prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, which efforts attract top
17 physicians and scientists from around the world to Moffitt
18 Cancer Center, and
19 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center provides multidisciplinary
20 care for the best outcomes to more than 100,000 unique patients
21 with more than 700,000 outpatient visits from all 67 Florida
22 counties, 50 states, and 133 countries, and
23 WHEREAS, to accommodate patient growth and fulfill a
24 critical need for increased outpatient services, expansions have
25 included the opening of the Moffitt Cancer Center at
26 International Plaza in 2011, Moffitt McKinley Outpatient Center
27 in 2015, Moffitt McKinley Hospital in 2023, Moffitt at
28 SouthShore in 2024, and the Speros Outpatient Center in 2026 as
29 part of the expanding Speros research and innovation campus in
30 Pasco County, and
31 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center has grown from 400 employees
32 to more than 10,000 over the span of 40 years, and today has an
33 economic impact of nearly $3 billion, and
34 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center annually trains more than
35 2,600 students, and
36 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is a leader in breakthrough
37 discoveries in basic, clinical, quantitative, and population
38 science, and
39 WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is committed to providing
40 education, screening, and innovative treatments to reduce the
41 cancer burden through collaborative efforts with partner
42 organizations, continued use of mobile screening, and research
43 to advance care and treatment options for patients, NOW,
44 THEREFORE,

46 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

48 That the Florida Senate recognizes and commends Moffitt
49 Cancer Center on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and joins
50 with Moffitt in its mission to contribute to the prevention and
51 cure of cancer and to realize its vision to transform cancer
52 care through cutting edge science, high quality clinical care,
53 and novel partnerships.
