Senate President-Designate Joe Negron Applauds Gov. Scott's Declaration of Emergency and Sets Out Session-End Plan to Address Lake O Discharges
Stuart, Fla - "I want to thank Governor Scott for declaring a State of Emergency in Martin and St. Lucie Counties due to the flooding of our community by the federal Army Corps of Engineers. In the final two weeks of the 2016 Legislative Session, I will be focused on three priorities that will alleviate the catastrophic damage to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon caused by the discharges from Lake Okeechobee. They are as follows:
1. Obtain approval during Budget Conference of the $8.25 million I have already placed in the Senate budget for construction of the Caulkins Water Farming Project in Martin County, which can be completed in less than a year and will hold 30 billion gallons of water.
2. Secure final passage of SB 1168, known as the Legacy Florida bill, that will provide a recurring $200 million a year from Amendment 1 funds for Everglades restoration, with a specific preference for projects that reduce discharges from Lake Okeechobee. SB 1168, which I have filed in the Senate, will be considered by the Subcommittee on General Government Appropriations on Monday, February 29th.
3. Continue plans with Governor Scott, DEP and the SFWMD to temporarily store water anywhere in Florida on public or private lands to keep the water from being discharged into our Estuary.
These three goals will be my highest personal priority as we begin Budget Conference in Tallahassee this weekend."
