Project Description:

This project will improve the Town of Welaka's wastewater collection system and replace collapsed and broken portions of the collection system serving the development of Sportsman's Harbor. The area involved bortders a tributary to the St. Johns River.Expansion of the collection system will provide sewer service to 164 locations currently using septic tanks, many of which have been identified by the county health unit as failing.Because of the poor condition of the collection system serving Sportsman's Harbor, the water entering the wastewater treatment plant impairs its operation.Although the level of nutrient and bacterial reductions has not been determined, FDEP has reported that improvement to this collection system will relieve the nitrogen and bacteria loading to the lower St. Johns River.FDEP has identified the town as an economically disadvantaged community.
