Project Description:

The Heart Center for Excellence is a world class facility ebing developed in Broward County, dedicated to fight against heart disease throughout the State of Florida.Heart disease is our nation's number one killer and the leading cause of death in Broward County and the State of Florida.Last year alone there were 5,633 cases in Broward alone that resulted in death due to heart attacks, totaling thirt nine percent of all deaths. The Center has been leading the way,and will continue to lead the way in providing the most up to date, comprehensive, preventive, diagnostic, medical, interventional, surgical, and rehabilitative cardiovascular services in a world-class facility. The program is committed to the advancement of medical education, research and the delivery of the highest quality compassionate, state of the art patient care for the State of Florida. Programs focus on prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment. The Heart Center of Excellence is also involved in research that will benefit patients throughout the State. It is already engaged in seventeen different research studies on treatment advances in cardiac care with an additional thirteen studies planned, but not yet implemented. The Center is currently performing studies on congestive heart failure (Medicare's number on DRG for hospital admissions). and expects the results of the study to reduce hospital stays and provide alternative technology for patients who suffer from congestive heart failure. In addition, one of the many studies the Center will be perfoming pertains to theheart muscle and decreasing the damage caused by heart attacks.Damage caused to the heart muscle is one of the leading causes of heart attacks. The study involves blood thinners and focuses on advances in "clot busting agents".The results of the study are intended to decrease the morbidity and mortality rate. The Heart Center for Excellence has already demonstrated its standard of excellence by maintaining a standard of only 9% for Acute Myocardial Infarction, which supersedes the national mortality rate of 27%. This request will facilitate the Heart Center's research work and its ability to help more people throughout the State of Florida.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The Heart Center of Excellence is already engaged in seventeen different research studies ont treatment advances in cardiac care with an additional thirteen studies already planned, yet not implemented. The Center is currently performing studies on congestive heart failure (medicare's number one DRG for hospital admissions), and expects the results of the study to reduce hospital stays and provide alternative technology for patients who suffer from congestive heart failure.Another study pertaining to blood thinners is addressing advances in "clot busting agents" which decrease the damage caused to the heart muscle. Damage caused to the heart muscle is the leading cause of death by heart attack. This therefore decreases the morbidity and mortality rate.
