Project Description:

This program is being developed toprovide a priority based cost-share funding source to implement water resources improvement and protection projects within the headwater of the Kissimmee-Lake Okeechobee-Everglages system. This heardwaters area was not included in the Kissimmee River Restoration or Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program planning and implementation activities. Consequently there has been a lower level of resources available to be dedicated to address multiple water resource issues within this area. This program will utilize a team of representatives from state, county, municipal, and stakeholder agencies and organizations topropose and priortize a through a formal quantified rnaking process water resource implementation projects to address issues of (1) flood control level of service, (2) water quality, (3) water supply, and (4) enviromental enhancement. Prioritization ranking factors will include at a minimum cost wshare partners (required 50%), regional benefit, and rapid implementability. In addition, preliminarily identified projects will include restoration of an upper tributary to Lake Tohopekaliga, East Mill Slough restoration, Kissimmee Upper Basin septic tank retrofits, and minimum flows and levels development.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Improve water quality of headwaters tributaries to the Kissimmee-Lake Okeechobee-Everglades system, improve water supply resources for the region, reduced scientific uncertainty in assessing the effectiveness and effciency of restoration practices (i.e. maximize return on investment and maximize long-term cost avoidances), and increased public safety.
