To build a facility to implement work accomplished by our research and pilot programs, and then duplicate it throughout the State. Each facility will support each specific community and is projected to save 42% on health care costs over a 10 year period reducing costs to the State Medicaid system. This savings becomes more meaningful whe4n the baby boomers come on line.

Project Description:

This 29,712 square foot Center, to support Alzheimer's and dementia victims will be built around a 7,981 square foot garden type courtyard. The patient's rooms will open up into a large living area overlooking the garden type courtyard. Meet the 2 major challenges to overcome in meeting their basic human needs in the case of treatment of people with with this devasting disease: 1) the need for dignity, the need for creativity, to reduce stress and anxiety, to imporve and extend the quality of life for both the caregiver and the care recipient and 2) to reduce the huge cost to society and to families by delaying long term nursing care. The Embers hope to keep loved ones in their home environment for a longer period of time.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The implementation of our programs for caregiver intervention and our multi-therapeutic intervention, we hope to solve these cqhallenges, reflected in #7.This in turn will lengthen time spent in home care and reduce the stress factor with caregivers, to stop early placement into long term care.Because of excessive stress the participant is dumped to enable the caregiver to escape. We are designing our program to eliminate or deduce this practice, which has placed excessive financial burden on the Medicaid system. We estimate we could see overall savings of about 42% in overall health care cost with our preliminary research data projected over a ten year period, using 2001 cost. This data is based on the premises that we extend in-home care by a factor of 2.3
