Project Description:

Indigent Guardians are currently represented by the public guardianship program through state funding. The public guardianship program only exists in three circuits and does not cover the needs of the State of Florida. The Veteran's Administration (VA) provides benefits to veterans under court supervision. The VA has expressed an interest in participating in the project as well. This collaborative effort between the Administrative Office of the Courts, Thirteenth Judicial Circuit; University of South Florida, School of Social Work and the Veterans Administration will create a pilot program to ensure that indigent guardianship needs are met in Hillsborough County.

Service Provided: University of South Florida students will serve as guardians on cases involving indigent wards and veterans

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Outcome measures will focus on what percentage of wards are maintained in the community in the indigent guardianship project in comparison to wards assigned to other guardians. Variables, such as the severity of the illness, will be controlled on a statistical level in order to make the most accurate comparison.
