Project Description:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To construct a state-of-the-art facility for marine mammal research, medical response and rehabilitation and veterinary training on the campus of Harbor Branch, adjacent to the River Lagoon. This facility will serve three vital purposes:

1.a marine mammal teaching hospital, working to rescue, study and rehabilitate stranded marine animals.

2.a pathology laboratory that can analyze important data regarding the cause and effect relationships between the environment and marine mammal moralities.Data collected from all marine mammal stranding events will be provided to the State's wildlifemanagement agencies and to NOAA/U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, Office of Portected Resources to rpovide vital infromation as an aid to develop long range conservation and resource management strategies.

3.Veterinary training facility for delivering instruction inmarine mammal surgical and other ceterinary techniques to veterinary students in Flroida, thereby opening up the field of marine mammal veterinary science to students in Flroida.The aim of this first-ever teaching facility, is not only use on-site training, but also live video tele-conferencing techniques and streaming internet video to facilitate distance learning abilities worldwide.

This three-pronged strategy aims to ensure that the health and viability of Florida's wild dolphin, manatee andwhale populations are not only maintained, but also improved.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

 

 

 

 

 

Using emerging video conferencing and internet technologies, deliver veterinary instruction world-wide to veterinary schools, public and aquaria and oceanariums.
