Project Description: |

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood's Satellite Learning Center. A curriculum is designed to combine the Center's visual and performing arts programming with the Florida Sunshine State Standards to raise the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test Scores, as well as increase student attendance and family participation. Children in grades 2 through 5 attend nine weeks of intensive instruction from 9 a.m. to 12 noon using the rich resources provided by the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. These students are bussed from their home school to the Center. Working with their classroom teacher and Center staff, students learn all basic required course work, as well as are provided extensive opportunities for personal growth and development. Satellite Learning Center teachers are trained in the use of cross-curriculum, creative, teaching methods. They utilize current exhibition space by conducting some classroom time in the galleries, as well as utilizing paintings and sculptures as learning tools. Those teachers and Center staff return to the home school once a month to train all other classroom teachers these methods of learning. The program also includes partnerships with D.A.R.E., students from Nova Southeastern University's medical program and an increase in visiting artists and performers. By doing so, this enables students to further develop positive relationships with their peers, members of the community and artists. All supplies, hardware, equipment and furniture are provided by the Center. The second floor exhibition space has been converted into an education center during school hours, and as a resource to families and educators from around the county outside of school hours. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The Satellite Learning Center program's impact is varied. As many studies have shown, education through the arts teaches more than line and color. The arts help students develop higher order thinking skills, self-discipline, encourage creative problem solving and develop divergent thinking skills. Art, much like sports, encourages teamwork, promotes self-esteem, encourages multi-cultural understanding and helps children learn to work towards solving problems cooperatively. Learning by this method has shown to improve attitudes towards learning and education while increasing participation in cultural activities. While studies continue to prove that strong arts programs are a powerful means to improve general education and standardized test scores, visual and performing arts programs are usually the first to be cut from the public school curriculum. As schools in south Florida and across the nation continue to reduce arts programming and funds, cultural institutions have had to redefine their role in the community to fill the gap. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood feel that this program provides children not only the opportunity to become art literate, but also provides a stimulating and safe environment that all families can provide to their children, not just a privileged few. |
