Project Description:

The State of Florida Department of Transportation has principal responsibility for the care and maintenance of the roadways, medians, and public easements along the State Roads as they pass through the City of Lauderdale Lakes whether those efforts are accomplished by contract or by the direct provision of services. Two of the most heavily traveled state roads (State Road 7 and State Road 816) intersect in the City. This intersection is the geographic center of Broward County and is at the center of the City's Community Redevelopment Area.Part of the success of redevelopment centers upon the provision of an environment that is aesthetically welcoming. This intersection is central to redevelopment and the attraction of business to central Broward County. As populations increase in Southeastern Florida and the entire area reaches build-out, infrastructure and economic redevelopment should be Statewide concerns. The City proposes to assume future landscape maintenance along these State easements and medians in the City in exchange for current irrigation and landscape funding of these roadways by the State. The statewide interests of promoting economic redevelopment in Southeastern Florida and the statewide interest in reducing landscape maintenance responsibilities are addressed by this proposal. This project involves the preliminary planning, solicitation and retention of architectural services, architectural plan development, plan review and permitting, solicitation for and selection of landscape installers, landscape and irrigation installation, and recurring landscape maintenance.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

:1 complete set of landscape plans for irrigation and landscape service; at least 10 water lines installed for the provision of water to medians;at least 4.5 linear miles of irrigated landscaping within State road medians; at least 4.5 miles of irrigated landscaping within the parallel public easements of state roads; 95% of installed landscaping in place after one year; results of a pre-test and post-test attitude survey of businesses should indicate a distinct preference for the improved area.
