Project Description:

Florida's infant screening program is a statewide program currently screening for 5 disorders. The Tandem Mass Spectrometry program will expand the program to include additional disorders such as Medium Chain Amino Acid Disorder (MCAD) and about 30 other currently published disorders. One of the disorders it will screen for has an incident rate of 1/12000 and, to date, there is no other method to screen for this disorder. The prevalence of a disorder detected by this new technology is on the order of 1/2500 (or more based on the Florida population pool). The goal of the TMS program is to prevent the onset of mental retardation and the manifestation of other disabilities, or even death, as well as the health costs associated with these.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Under this expanded program, of the 200,000 Florida newborns tested each year, an estimated 400 will have one or more of the above mentioned disorders detected.
