Project Description:
The St. Lucie Issues Team was established by the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force in the Summer of 1998. The intra-agency group's function is to identify and implement local stormwater retrofits and ecosystem restoration projects to enhance local coastal waters and to augment the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan within the Martin/St. Lucie County area. Each project implemented through this inititative is sponsored by a local governmental entity and includes at least 50% cost match. This year's submittal includes: funds to implement city stormwater retrofits (Stuart, Sewall's Point, Port St. Lucie), county stormwater retrofits (Martin and St. Lucie), baffle box installation (Stuart, Martin and St. Lucie Counties), Flood Plain Restoration (North and South Fork of the St. Lucie River), and citrus irrigation to microjet (Martin and St. Lucie Counties).

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? Yes
Has the project been submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection? Yes
DEP Identfying Number: SWR20022135

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The primary type of stormwater retrofit will be the creation of a retention/detention system in a watershed that has been built prior to the initiation of the stormwater regulatory programs. In general the retrofit will meet current criteria, 25 year/three day in these older neighborhoods which were previous served by a straight-line ditch to the estuary. Literature values and real life data indicate that we can expect 50-70% reduction in nutrients and contaminants.
