Statewide Interest: |
International Trade is one of the State's top industries. Hosting Hemispheric Trade Ministerial Meeting & Business Forum of the Americas will allow Florida to further engage in international promotion and increase Florida's position as the Hemispheric Trade Hub, in addition to enhancing the State's changes of becoming the Permanent Secretariat in 2005. Although at a smaller scale of that of Brussels serving as the central headquarters for the European Community, the FTAA Secretariat would bring additional travelers and business headquarters for hemispheric operations. In summary, it would result in additional business opportunities, job creation and community enhancement. |

Project Description: |
The central purpose of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is to promote economic growth and prosperity of the member countries by lowering barriers to trade and investment within the Wesyern Hemisphere. Oversight of the negotiating process is the responsibility of the Ministers of Trade who are required to meet at least every 18 months preceded by Americas Business Forum (ABF). While the Vice Ministers of Trade manage the negotiations, the ABF would bring over 3,000 business people and journalists to South Florida in November 2003 to participate. Miami-Dade County, in conjunction and on behalf of local jurisdictions, will share the lion's share of logistical support, transportation assistance, security detail support, as well as in-kind personnel. |
