Project Description:
The Big Cypress Basin Initiative is a combination of project components that have multiple benefits but all fall within the general goal of restoration and water quality improvment in Big Cypress Basin and the receiving coastal waters. The project components include flow way restoration at Camp Keais Strand, Okaloacoochee Slough and Barron River Canal, tramway rehabilitation and flow enhancement at Bird Rookery Swamp, development and implementation of Old World climbing fern (Lygodium), development of hydrodynamic mixing model of estuarine systems and acquisition of improved topographic information for flood control, watershed management, restoration and other purposes.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Major project components focus on restoration of sheet flow. Project components such as the Camp Keais Strand and Barron River Canal Flowway restoration would involve redesign of the canal and feeder ditches, providing stormwater treatment and eliminating or reducing point discharges to natural preserves on public lands and to the estuaries. These measures would lead to a reduction in loading of priority polutants such as total nitrogen, total suspended solids and phosphorus.
