One of three youths that becomes offenders begin his / her criminal career before age 13. The four risk factors prevalent among our youth: Low neighborhood attachment, frequent transition, mobility and academic failure.

Project Description:
Our program has two goals for the 11 -15 year olds: To improve academic proficiency by one grade level and to improve school attendance and self-esteem by changing the participants' social values. For the 16 - 17 year olds, our program goal is to increae employability skills and find a job. The younger youths will receive three months of group guidance sessions and weekly tutoring. They will be pre and post tested to measure changes in attitudes. We will monitor report cards to measure change in grades and attendance. The older youths will be provided a minimum of three employability skills training sessions and will be pre and post tested to determine increase in skills. They will also receive weekly academic tutoring and job search assistance.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
80% of 11 to 15 year olds will improve school attendance as indicated by school records. 20% of 11 to 15 year olds will improve their academic proficiency as measured by school records. 40% of the 11 to 15 year olds will improve their social values as measured by the pre-post test administered. 40% of the 16 to 17 year olds will increase their employability skills and life skills as indicated by the pre-post test. 20% of the 16 to 17 year olds (50 youths) will find part-time jobs. 20% of the 16 to 17 year olds (50 youths) will improve their academic proficiency by on grade level as indicated by their report cards.
