Statewide Interest: |
There are an estimated 455,000 Floridians living with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease affects an individual's sense of time, place, motion and direction. Wandering is a phenomenon associated with Alzheimer's disease and memory related disorders that results in the afflicted individuals becoming disoriented and wandering from their protective environment and becoming lost. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that 60% of all persons living with Alzheimer's disease will experience wandering during their illness and many will do so repeatedly. If a wanderer is not found within 24 hours, nearly 50% will suffer serious injury or death.

Project Description: |
The Safe Return Program is a collaborative effort of the Alzheimer's Association national office, regional Alzheimer's Association Chapters and program trained community law enforcement agencies. Safe Return is the only nationwide program which helps identify and return wanderer's to their caregivers. The Safe Return Program registers participants in a national database and provides them with identification tools such as bracelets, necklaces, clothing labels and/or wallet cards. Safe Return is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a master's level clinician through a toll free number. If a participant wanders and becomes lost, one call to the toll free number launches a sophisticated system designed to locate and safely return victims of wandering. When a wanderer is discovered, calling the toll free number on the wanderer's identification toll provides the information necessary to safely return the wanderer to their caregivers. Safe Return has a national recover rate of nearly 100% The Safe Return Program also provides the option for identification materials to be worn or carried by the caregivers that alerts emergency personnel that there is a person living with Alzheimer's under the person's care should the caregivers become involved in an accident or injury. This will set in motion the necessary systems to ensure that the care of the person with Alzheimer's disease is addressed should the caregivers be unable to do so.
