Project Description: |
Join-A-Team, Not A Gang is a gang prevention program that plans to serve 22,000 children in 200 schools, and will be staffed by 1 sergeant and 24 officers. This presentation component of the program will be available to all 5th grade students in Miami-Dade County's (MDC) unincorporated areas served by Miami-Dade Police Department, and focuses on gang alternatives and resistance strategies for students as they get ready to enter middle school. The University of Miami's Athletic Department will be a partner in this program by providing athletes and coaches as role models. The university will also provide sports camps, tickets to sports events, tours of their campus, and provide students with access to team practices.
Another 2,900 children will be impacted by this program through sports camps, sports clinics, and field trips to University of Miami sports events and youth sports teams. This component makes this program more than just a message, as it provides children with alternative attitudes. These activities would be available to boys and girls, ages 10 through 14.
