Project Description:
The William Lehman Injury Research Center (Lehman Center), located in the Ryder Trauma Center on the campus of the University of Miami School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, is a national model for the study of automobile injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. The Lehman Center was established in 1991 with funding from the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Centers research focuses on people who are injured or killed in frontal, side or rollover crashes that are restrained by seatbelt, airbag or combination. Jeffrey S. Augenstein, M.D., PhD., F.A.C.S., Professor of Surgery and Director of the William Lehman Injury Research Center heads the study commonly referred to as the "Crash Study". The "Crash Study" helps identify injury patterns and causation in these specific types of crashes. There's tremendous devastation that affects young people's families and friends. A multimedia computer presentation describing motor vehicle crashes and their effect on its young victims was developed. The presentation deals with vehicle safety devices (safety belts and airbags), driving while impaired, aggressive driving, and the importance of safe driving. The presentation is geared towards high school and college aged individuals. This is the time when people feel most "invincible."

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
We need to continue this education effort and make the materials web-based. The opportunity to save more lives is here. Using web-based educational tools we will pre-test and post-test knowledge, attitude and behavior. Educational efforts must be continued and advanced to reduce the unnecessary and preventable motor vehicle injuries and death.
