Statewide Interest: |
This project will increase water quality for Caloosahatchee River Basin and its estuaries. Most of the developed areas of the city are less that one and a half miles form the Caloosahatchee River, an intercoastal waterway. Many sections of our City have failing septic systems by extending the lines of the new wastewater treatment system. In addition, the increased capacity of the new plant will allow the City to eliminate the need for new septic systems to be installed within the service area. |

Project Description: |
Phae II Installation sanitary sewer lines and connections to residents and business in the City of LaBelle currently not on the wastewater treatment system. The Wastewater Treatment System consists of Phase I-plant and effluent disposal site (completed) and Phase II-installation of sanitary sewer lines, connection and lift stations. Phase II actual bids have exceeded construction budget by $3,824,000. Our engineers and the apparent low bidder have explained that the difference is due to increased cost of fuel and petroleum products as a result of the September 11th attacks and war on terrorism. |

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
We will be improving the water quality for our area by reducing the number of septic systems currently used. Improving the water quality in the Caloosahatchee River and the acquifers obviously has a regional impact which benefits residents of the City of LaBelle and surrounding areas in Hendry, Glades and Lee Counties. These areas have consistently high unemployment rates and have been designated by Governor Bush as rural areas of critical economic concern. In addition, all of the City of LaBelle, as well as, Hendry County have been designated a HUB zone by the federal government. |
