Project Description: |
The Charlotte Harbor Initiative is a combination of project components that have multiple benefits but all fall within the general goal of restoration and water quality improvement which address the overall goal of restoration and water quality improvement in Charlotte Harbor and the surrounding Watershed. The individual components include spoil island restoration, restoration of native vegetation, exotic removal and control, wetland restoration, restoration of submerged aquatic vegetation, re-establishment of mangroves along disturbed shoreline and fisheries enhancement and assessment. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Through ecosystem restoration, this initiative will enhance water quality, (e.g. through wetlands, shoreline mangroves, seagrasses, and oysters) and by restoring flow-ways it will prevent excessive freshwater runoff into the Harbor. Fisheries assessment and benthic sampling will be tools to monitor the success of the restoration activities.
Wetland plants, including mangroves and seagrasses, take up nutrients (T&P) from the water and soil along with stabilizing sediments (improve water clarity). Oysters improve water quality and clarity by filtering out solids from the water (filter feeding). Restoration of flow-ways to decrease the amount of contaminated water running into the Harbor from land and environmental clean-up will remove contaminated muck sediments. Completion of the combination of the listed projects will enhance habitat quality within the Harbor and its watershed through the increase in water clarity and better water quality.
