Project Title: Riverfront Theatre Capital Campaign Date Submitted 1/15/2004 9:03:42 PM

Sponsors: Bennett

Statewide Interest:
The Manatee Players, Inc. provides six mainstage theatrical productions, three children's series performances, and two additional musical revues during a season, which runs from September through July. During our season we provide cultural experiences for over 22,000 area residents and visitors. This additionally offers over 400 community members both performing and technical onstage and backstage volunteer opportunities of a professional nature. We also contract for additional performances through independent production companies during the summer months. What started as a summer camp program for children has grown to include a year round youth performance academy. This educational program serves community youth ages 8 - 18.

Project Description:
: The Riverfront Theatre, which serves as the stage for The Manatee Players, Inc., is a 50 year old building in need of extensive repairs including a new roof, expanded office space, handicapped accessibility, and improved wiring and plumbing to bring the building up to code. Due to the costs involved in making these improvements, it has been deemed more feasible to demolish the existing structure and build a new theatre facility.

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
: Because the population of Bradenton has grown in congruence with the rapid growth of Florida overall, and this area is the third most rapidly growing community in our state, a recent feasibility study indicated a necessity to expand our seating capacity and our ability to provide enjoyable theatrical events for a larger viewing audience. Therefore, the successful outcome of building a new theatre will be our ability to open our doors nightly to an audience larger than our current capacity of 238 seats (the new building will include two performance spaces and accommodate at least an additional 261 attendees per performance). Through our Educational Outreach programs, our goal is to offer approximately 150 Manatee County Language Arts teachers live performances of literature that is part of their curriculum and study guides to prepare students for the theatrical encounter. If 30 of those teachers avail themselves of this opportunity during the upcoming school year to see Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (a ninth grade requirement), our inaugural year will be considered a success. As this program grows, the need for additional performance space becomes even more vital. Finally, the Manatee Players, Inc. will make available internships for approximately 10 high school or college students who would like to explore careers in the performing arts. Currently, we have very limited space to house such a program. The new building will afford us instructional and gathering spaces to provide seminars, workshops, and hands-on experience in the field
