Project Description: |
Since the early 1940's, the United States Sugar Corporation has supplied potable water for the City of Clewiston and surrounding unincorporated areas including the South Shore Water Association (SSWA) Inc., a not for profit, and the community of Harlem, pop 3000. On August 18, 2003, the City and other users were notified that subsequent to September 1, 2006, the United States Sugar Corporation would no longer supply drinkin waater to any thir party. Therefore, it is essential for the City to Construct a new municipal water supply system. The project proposes a 3.0 MGD water production facility which will serve 3,897 in-city customers, and, 1,140 out-of city customers and 2,000 rural customers of the SSWA in Hendry, Glades and Palm Beach Counties. |

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The impact of this project can be measured in two ways. First by the availibility of a much higher quality of water to the residents of this city and surrounding unincorporated areas. This facility will change the existing water supply from Lake Okeechobee to a gound water source which not only produces the higher drinking water quality but is environmentally advantageous. Second, without a new alternative water source, the economicv impact in lost jobs to this community would be overwhelming. Approximately 2,300 jobs (not including government agencies) would not be lost. |
