Project Description: |
Funds are requested to improve support of the operation of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Justification for this request is based on costs that have increased over the last five years associated with teaching veterinary students and training house officers in the facility. Annually, the VMTH must absorb $1,530,000 in costs by writing-off bad debt and indigent care ($50,000), residency training programs ($1,000,000) as well as costs associated with training DVM students in the hospital ($175,000 in necropsy costs associated with hospital deaths, $55,000 in infection control and $250,000 in teaching subsidies). In reality, the VMTH is a teaching laboratory where clinical training is provided for DVM students and residents. VMTH patient care programs are essential and critical to the college's training programs. The hospital also provides a forum for clinical research activities and translational research in which basic research discoveries are taken from the bench and applied to patients. |
