Expansion of Outpatient Treatment For Substance Abusing Youth

Requester: Kevin Lewis, Executive Directo Organization: Southwest Florida Addiction Services, Inc.

Project Title: Expansion of Outpatient Treatment For Substance Abusing Youth Date Submitted 1/12/2006 10:12:21 AM

Sponsors: Bennett

Statewide Interest:
Subatance abuse by youth is closely related to juvenile crime-this region of Florida is the second lowested funded area for treatment of youth substance abuse. Youth identified in need of outpatient treatment may wait up to three months to begin treatment. This results in Southwest Florida committing more youth to the state's custody than urban areas such as Miami and Tampa regions. This impacts the state budget in that youth in need of care that end up committed cost the state execessively for less effective juvenile justice commitment programs.
