Statewide Interest: |
Currently, there are no comprehensive centers for sports injury care and prevention for athletes, especially youth, on the west coast of Florida. The SMART Institute will address this community and state need by providing a multidisciplinary center that will provide athletes and their families with the preferred venue for their sports injury care and be the main source of injury prevention education in the state of Florida. This project will also contribute substantially to Health Care as a Economic Develpment targeted industry. |

Project Description: |
The USF Health Sports Medicine and Athletic Related Trauma (SMART) Institute would enable the investigation of the impact that sports related trauma and illness has across the life span and the impact of realted movement dysfunction disability and impairments post-participation on health related quality of life. This Institute would focus on the best practice strategies, prevention, and clinical outcomes building upon the USF Health's current strengths within its Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health and the School of Physicial Therapy. In the area of medical education, this program will provide key components to the new curriculum in the areas of musculoskeletal knowledge and provide support for orthopedic faculty for an accredited orthopedic residency. The program will provide funding for new research faculty in the key basic science disciplines (i.e. biomechanics, exercise physiology), as well as physical therapy, and athletic training programs. In addition, partnering with the College of Public Health would allow the creation of a Sports Injury Registry for the Tampa Bay Region and the State of Florida. It is proposed that the Institute be funded as a research, teaching, and clinical center that brings new perspectives to the treatment of athletic related trauma and the relationships between exercise, fitness and injury across the lifespan. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
reduction in the number of severity of injuries to athletes of all ages; increased number of trained professionals in Orthopedics; increased skill level and knowledge of those involved with sports and sport-related activities (i.e. athletic trainers, coaches, and participants at all levels); development of a sports injury data base piloted first in the schools and then throughout community medical and sports facilities; contributing to the economic impact of Health Care as a targeted industry both for the immediate Tampa Bay region and ultimately for the state. |
