Project Description:
The Lower St. Johns River Basin Initiative is an ongoing effort to restore and enhance the lower St. Johns River and its tributaries. Many factors threaten the health of the lower St. Johns River. As urban growth increased, so did the discharge of wastewater and storm water from urban areas. This increase in discharge has resulted in a steady decline in the river's water quality. Farming aslo has had an impact on the river in the form of agricultural runoff. All of these factors contribute to algal blooms, which block the sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. These algal blooms ultimately affect the manatee and the fish that depend on the plants for food and habitat. Funding through this initiative will help to restore and enhance the river. Examples follow of subprojects that could be funded through this request. This list is in alphabetical order and is not a complete listing: *Durkeeville West Stormwater Treatment Facility *Hogans Creek *Implementation of Loch/Rane Bel-med Regional Stormwater Treatment-Water Quality Enhancements *Implementation of Master Stormwater Management Plan-Center Street Watershed *Implementation of Master Stormwater Management Plan Clay Street, Walburg Street & Ferris Street Watersheds, Implementation of Master Stormwater Management Plan-Gum Street Watershed *Implementation of Stormwater Treatment in the Doctors Lake Watershed-Water Quality Enhancements, Pollution Load Reduction Goal and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Development and Implementation *Sandalwaood Canal Regional Stormwater Treatment Facility *State Road A1A Stormwater Treatment Facility *Tributary Assessment-City of Jacksonville *Tributary Remediation-City of Jacksonville *Tri-County Agricultural Area Regional Stormwater Treatment Initiative *Tri-County Agricultural Area Water Quality Protection Cost-Share Program - Phase 2 *Zero Discharge Initiative (TMDL Implementation)
