The Biscayne Bay Initiative will address high priority water resources restoration and enhancement issues in Biscayne Bay (an Outstanding Florida Water) and the Biscayne Bay watershed, through projects that will protect and improve Biscayne Bay for the public and the environment.

Project Description:
The Initiative is for implementing projects toward achieving goals and objectives for Biscayne Bay ecological restoration and enhancement, water quality improvements and development of environmental assessment tools. Specifically, the Initiative provides support for various projects and efforts identified through the Biscayne Bay SWIM Plan, the Biscayne Bay Partnership Initiative, the Biscayne Bay Regional Restoration Coordination Team and the Strategic Science Plan for Biscayne Bay. These projects include restoration and enhancement of hydrology/freshwater flows, restoration and enhancement of coastal habitats, development of water management tools, environmental monitoring and research, strategic planning, and environmentally sustainable public access and education.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Initiative projects will include: shoreline stabilization and coastal habitat restoration and enhancement which will prevent erosion and/or re-suspension of solids, reduce nutrients through uptake by native wetland flora and filtering of suspended substances; environmental monitoring and research to reduce uncertainty in the ability to predict the physical, chemical and biological responses of Biscayne Bay to changes in the quality and quantity, timing and distribution of surface water and groundwater flows; and support for guiding efforts and prioritizing activities to balance appropriate economic use with improved public access, increased habitat restoration and environmental protection.
