Project Description:
The PCB spill into the lower Escambia River Circa 1969 resulted in an area of highly contaminated sediments with PCB concentrations nearly 100 times the probable Effects concentration level for harmful environmental effects and significant human health reisk. the known persistence of PCBs in sediments, along with recent data showing high concentration in sediments and fish tissue, indicates that significant PCB contamination and human Health concerns remain after 35 years. The Water Quality Section of the Escambai county Engineering Department proposes to lead a targeted sediment sampling effort in the lower Escambia River and upper Escambia Bay region, in collaboration with the University of West Florida, to measure PCB concentration at multiple sites and sediment depths in the impaired area. Data will be used to accurately delineate and map the extent and severity of PCB contamination, determine the area and volume of highly contaminated sediments and develop a remediateion plan to sequester or remove the contaminated sediment to alleviate human health risk, ecological impairment, and economic loss.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The project will provide essential, but currently unavailable informationon the extent severity of PCB contamination of sediments in upper Escambia Bay. As a result stakeholders, governments, and agency staff will have a strong scientificbasis from which to address this issue and make informed decisions regarding potential actions to reduce public health, economic, and environmental impacts, and to improve seafood safety.
