Miami Children's Hospital is one of two State approved Pediatric Trauma Centers in Miami-Dade County. In 2004, there was a 48% increase in patient trauma alerts. Over 500 children were treated for trauma related injuries at Miami Children's Hospital. Maintaining a team of pediatric emergency medicine, surgical and subspecialty physicians and staff available 24/7 to care for and manage these children requires an intense/ongoing investment in training and equipment. Since unintentional injury is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of 14, the maintenance and further development of this service is critical to the well-being of the children in the community.
