Project Description:
Approximately 30% of the estimated 30,000 population living in the Sebastian River area are age 65 or older. Currently there is not one affordable assisted living facility in Sebastian. In fact, both state and countywide there is a paucity of affordable, and subsidized assisted living options for low-income seniors. Our objective is to develop an affordable senior housing community with integrated long-term services for frail elders living in Indian River and the surrounding counties. In addition, our mission is to expand the supply of high quality affordable housing, and to provide options for low to moderate-income residents of the county. Offered at affordable rates, and with no entrance fee, our proposed 41-bed single story facility for seniors will provide comfortable, efficient, and quality housing for residents that will facilitate their maximum independence and dignity. Housing will incorporate features that help insure privacy and autonomy as well as provide assisted healthcare needed to help maintain the highest level of resident functioning. Housed on 6.57 acres of environmentally protected land near the St. Sebastian River, the facility will incorporate standard access and safety features and include communal areas that encourage socialization and activity. We will also provide stimulating on-and-off site activities, and promote the idea that our residents to the best of their abilities, continue to be of service to their families and the surrounding community. People of all races and religions will be welcome.Programs & Services: Emergency call system connected to 24-hour monitored emergency service desk. Exercise class twice a week. Scheduled events such as birthday parties, music, potlucks, card games, & bingo. Free blood pressure screening twice a month. Transportation stops weekdays by the Indian River County Council on Aging and rides by appointment to doctors. Meals on Wheels (optional) Education Programs: By the River will provide educational programs for the residents as well as others in the local community. These programs may include: Yoga and Fitness classes Financial Counseling Bereavement Counseling Song and Dance Classes Indian River County officials have unanimously approved the conceptual plan. In addition local service agencies and physicians who treat the area's elderly have all agreed that there is a strong need in Sebastian for more affordable housing for senior citizens. The parent organization of this project, Kashi Foundation, has more than 25 years experience working with the sick and the elderly and is uniquely qualified to offer educated and compassionate support for the facility. The land to build the center is already in our possession. Funding for capital investment will come from a variety of sources. A matching grant from the county for $1,150,00 has been approved through the Hurricane Housing Relief Program.
